The one event that had singularly transformed the entire socio-cultural
canvas of the large body -polity of Assam way back in late 15th and early
16th century , was the neo-vaishnavite movement started by the great Saint
Mahapurush Sankaradeva , who had chosen Majuli as the germination centre
of his religio-cultural movement in Assam. It was not merely confined
to the strict regimen of an ascetic school of thought, with predominantly
moralistic undertones, but in effect it was a comprehensive social movement
with religion playing the pivotal role. It encompassed a whole gamut of
activities with strong elemts of mass appeal to galvanize the prople to
a well-knit nationality pursuing piety as a means of all round excellence.
To do that the great reformer devised various ways and means to motivate
the people and imbibe them with the spirit of equality and fraternity
irrespective of their intrinsic diversity. The movement soon ushered in
a cultural renaissance to the state. The rich legacy of this renaissance
finally provided the building blocs of a vibrant Assamese culture transcending
subsequent centuries and kept alive in the institutions of satras and
Namghars till today.
